Carrick faces pressure after Bournemouth defeat deepens Manchester United slump

Manchester United’s 3-0 loss to Bournemouth leaves them close to the relegation zone as Michael Carrick’s dispute with captain Bruno Fernandes adds to the pressure.

Manchester United’s 3-0 home defeat by Bournemouth on Sunday, October 25, intensified scrutiny of manager Michael Carrick, with the club sitting 16th in the Premier League and just one point above the relegation zone. Supporters sang Carrick’s name as he left the Old Trafford pitch, while directing their frustration at the players and owners.

The loss was United’s sixth of the season and extended their winless run across all competitions to eight matches. Their opening seven league fixtures have produced their poorest start since 1986. The latest setback followed Wednesday’s 4-1 Champions League defeat at Como, which also exposed a disagreement between Carrick and club captain Bruno Fernandes.

Fernandes remained an unused substitute against Bournemouth after criticising Carrick’s tactics in the defeat in Italy. His criticism concerned the approach that prevented United from pressing their opponents. The decision to leave him out brought the strained relationship between the manager and one of the club’s most influential players into sharper focus.

Since joining United in 2020, Fernandes has become a central figure at the club. He won the Professional Footballers’ Association’s Player of the Year award last season after setting a Premier League record for assists in a single campaign. United finished third, a league position they have surpassed only twice in 13 years. Carrick, who replaced Ruben Amorim on an interim basis in January, received the permanent job in the summer following that improvement.

Former England defender Jamie Carragher called for United to dismiss Carrick on Sunday. Speaking to Sky Sports, he argued that the club’s league position could not be allowed to continue. Carragher said supporters’ backing reflected Carrick’s standing in United’s history, while the current players had achieved little compared with previous teams. He also described the relationship within the dressing room as untenable.

Gary Neville, who played alongside Carrick for both United and England, said the manager retained popularity that the owners, sporting department and players lacked. He suggested a decision to remove Carrick would anger supporters but could nevertheless be necessary. His assessment of the wider situation was blunt: “The club is a mess.”

Carrick accepted responsibility at his post-match news conference and said he intended to continue working as usual. “I take the responsibility,” he said. He maintained that his decisions were guided by what he believed would serve the club best, while acknowledging that his efforts had failed to prevent the current difficulties. He also said the supporters’ response had been unexpected and meant a great deal to him.

The pressure comes against the backdrop of United’s prolonged wait for another Premier League title, their last having arrived in 2013. Carrick is the club’s 11th manager since Sir Alex Ferguson retired. Despite the support he received on Sunday, the combination of poor results and his dispute with Fernandes has left his future uncertain.
