Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado announced on Monday that she is prepared to meet with interim President Delcy Rodríguez. The statement came after Machado returned to Venezuela on Sunday, marking her first entry into the country in seven months. She had been in exile since leaving last December to accept the Nobel Peace Prize in Norway.

The proposal for dialogue created a split among the Venezuelan community in South Florida. Carlos Perez, an exile in the region, expressed skepticism about the value of negotiating with the current administration. Perez described Rodríguez as a chavista, a term referring to the political movement established by the late Hugo Chávez and continued under ousted President Nicolás Maduro. He argued that the group is not suitable for negotiations because they do not represent a complete change in power.

Perez stated that he and others want a total shift in leadership rather than an agreement with the existing figures. Despite his doubts about the process, he affirmed his confidence in Machado's leadership. He noted that her actions provide hope for the community even as questions remain about the outcome of potential talks.

Geraldine Pullas offered a supportive view, arguing that Venezuelans should trust Machado's judgment in a complex political environment. Pullas praised the leader's bravery in taking on the difficult position of engaging with the government. She stated that Machado has continued fighting for the people even when hope seemed low.

Ernesto Ackerman, president of the Independent Venezuelan American Citizens Organization in South Florida, voiced concerns about the physical safety of Machado during her stay. He noted that she is the primary leader of the opposition and that her presence under Rodríguez's rule carries risk. Ackerman suggested that the return places renewed pressure on Washington, which has supported Rodríguez since the U.S. military operation that ousted Maduro.

President Donald Trump addressed Machado's presence during a press interaction. He described her as a very nice woman and noted that she had given him her Nobel Prize. Trump expressed hope for her safety while stating that the U.S. is doing well in Venezuela. Ackerman interpreted these comments as opening a door for insecurity regarding Machado's status in the country. Machado has called for presidential elections by next July and has expressed interest in running for president.
