Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley is active for the Monday night game against the Dallas Cowboys at Lincoln Financial Field. The team confirmed his status on Sunday, ending his absence from the field following a hamstring injury.
Barkley had been listed as questionable ahead of the matchup. He returned to practice as a limited participant on Thursday and Friday before becoming a full participant on Saturday. His return comes as the Eagles prepare to face their division rivals with key offensive weapons sidelined.
The Eagles remain without starting quarterback Jalen Hurts, who is expected to miss the remainder of the season after blood clots were found in his lungs. Wide receiver DeVonta Smith is also out with a hamstring injury. Barkley’s availability provides a much-needed boost to an offense that has struggled to gain consistent yardage this year.
Barkley has rushed for 182 yards and no touchdowns in four games this season. He played in fewer than 16 percent of offensive snaps in half of those appearances. He initially suffered a stinger during the Week 2 game against the Tennessee Titans and later pulled his hamstring in the first quarter of the Week 4 contest against the Los Angeles Rams.
Statistical data shows a clear performance gap with Barkley on the field. He has averaged 5.1 yards per carry on 36 attempts, while the other Eagles running backs have averaged 2.8 yards per rush on 71 attempts. In the previous week’s game against the Carolina Panthers, the Eagles used Dameon Pierce on just 12 rushing attempts, gaining 35 yards and scoring one touchdown.
The Eagles have averaged fewer than 4.0 yards per play in three consecutive games, a streak not seen since 1999. The team has been out-gained by an average of 108.3 total yards per game this season, which ranks as the worst mark in the NFL. The Eagles have won four straight home games against the Cowboys, a streak tied for the second-longest in franchise history. They have also won seven of their last eight primetime home contests.
The Cowboys enter the game as a potential test for the Eagles' offensive progress. Barkley’s participation is expected to influence the running game strategy significantly in the fourth quarter and beyond, though the team will rely on its current lineup to manage the clock and field position against a familiar opponent.
