Jay-Z will perform at the 2027 Super Bowl halftime show.
The National Football League announced the booking this week. The game is scheduled for February 2027 at SoFi Stadium. Jay-Z is not the first rapper to play the halftime slot, but he is the first artist to control the booking process for the event through his own agency. His firm, Roc Nation, signed a deal with the NFL in 2019 to book the lineup for the league's annual championship game. That contract pays Jay-Z $25 million for the role. He has curated the talent list for seven years under that agreement.
The announcement comes after a turbulent year for the rapper. In early 2026, Jay-Z faced new rape allegations in a civil lawsuit that also named Sean Combs as a co-defendant. Jay-Z denied the claims and filed a defamation suit against the attorney, Tony Buzbee, who filed the initial paperwork. An appellate court recently dismissed that suit. Combs denied the allegations against him but was sentenced to more than four years in prison on separate prostitution-related charges. Jay-Z used the past year to rebrand his public image. He told GQ magazine in March that 2026 is a year for offense after years of defense. He changed his name back to include umlauts over the letters. He also cut the locs he had grown in honor of his daughter and his late uncle.
Jay-Z sold out three consecutive nights at Yankee Stadium during his recent tour. During the first show, he addressed the public backlash over a vinyl record release that was only available at Target stores. That release coincided with a boycott of the retailer over its diversity policy. Jay-Z rapped about the criticism before starting his song Politics As Usual. He said, They say I sold out. Yeah, I did sell out. Three nights. I sold Yankee Stadium the hell out. The performance marked a return to a confident public stance after the legal battles.
The rapper is also releasing an eight-episode HBO documentary titled Jay-Z in 8. The series features conversations with producer Rick Rubin. They listen to Jay-Z's music in a former stock exchange building in France. The documentary covers personal topics, including the death of his father and generational trauma. In the final episode, Jay-Z criticizes what he calls house Negroes who act as extortionists to gain financial support from white power structures. He says these figures claim to represent Black communities while aligning with those in charge for profit. He notes that the community is not acting together to align its power and finances for the benefit of the group. Critics have pointed out that this description fits his own career moves, such as his stake in the Barclays Center development and his role in the NFL's marketing strategy.
The Super Bowl appearance follows Jay-Z's continued work as a cultural broker. He holds a minority ownership stake in the Brooklyn Nets and played a role in the deal that built Barclays Center. He has also been involved in the NFL's efforts to manage its public image regarding racial justice. The league's billionaire owners have used his presence to address criticism from fans and players. The 2027 halftime show will be the next major event in his schedule. The performance will take place in front of a large television audience. The booking confirms his status as a central figure in both hip-hop and major American sports.
